I'm having another one of those years where I see tons of cool/fun/interesting stuff that I want to buy for people for Christmas, or just because. My sister and I have already bought a Wii and WiiFit as a joint gift from both of us to my mother and aunt, but of course I see ideas for my mother. Oh, and she actually OFFERED an idea this year. Hmmm, too bad there, Mom. I like buying things just for the heck of it without necessarily making a habit of it - I don't think that's mean, but I suppose people might take it that way, or be offended. But you know how it goes - you gift someone and then they feel like they need to reciprocate then or in the future. I really wish people didn't feel that way. Anyway, the way my thoughts are going, I'll be buying a lot of stuff this year! That's fine because it's fun. Now, a lot of what I'm seeing is online, so it's still possible that I'll run into some horrid shipping costs, which will, of course, cut down on what I buy and give. I think I'll start ordering some stuff this weekend. I had one item bookmarked for someone, but luckily (I think), it sold. I'll probably still keep an eye on the store for another one to show up. It would be a really funny thing to give, but I'm not sure if it's worth the money the seller charged for that type of present. I mean it's not a gag gift, but it's not exactly useful, either, except as eye candy and conversation fodder. Oh well. If it shows up again and I buy it, I'll post it for you to see.
And speaking of gifty things, I can't believe I'm so lazy as to still have a few things to send out from the time of this year's Squee. I'll probably end up sending everything at the same time as I do my Christmas mailing since I won't really have time before that. My exam is December 3rd, so I really don't have time for much of anything before then. I really need a car. I think the time is drawing near for that, but again, too much else going on to take care of first. It's a vicious circle.
Yeah, so I'm going to shut up now. You can thank me later. Or now. Thank me now if you really want to.
It's been a long time since I posted anything from Nut and Bee. The first picture is from N&B. The other pics are a small sampling of pics from Lunchbreath (the cross-sections are great!), whose link, in a roundabout way, is from N&B as well. And, uhhhh, I swear, I had no one in particular in mind when I chose some of these samples. Really. More than one maybe, but not just one. You can see a "photo-essay" of his work in this article.
As some of you know, I have a huge beef with the additional charges that most US companies tack on for delivery to Canada. An example of one from last year was an order that was under one pound that would have cost $26.00 to ship to Canada. I had it shipped to Cranky instead and it cost under $5.00 (she then brought it to me in Boston, but I could have had her turn around and mail it to me, and both charges total would probably have been less than half of the charge for coming directly from the company). And rest assured, if I had had it shipped to me, the postage showing on the package would have been nowhere near $26.00, and even handling charges, or whatever the companies blame for the high shipping, don't even begin to add up to that much. I thought I'd seen some pretty inflated pricing in all of my internet play. Today takes the cake (so far, I guess, because now I'll believe anything is possible). I was poking around Urban Outfitters and saw some interesting stuff. As is my habit now, I figured I'd better check out the shipping charges before I got too excited. On the shipping info page, the following greets me:
>> Canada orders — add $50.00 to the standard shipping tiers shown above.
Does anyone love this as much as me? Or as much as I do? I'll accept answers to both. From SaltyandSweet.
Nope, you're eyes are not deceiving you - you are indeed seeing a knitted dissected frog and rat. And yes, they are in authentic dissecting trays. They're also available on a nice framed cork background, but hey, why give up the realism? You can order the patterns for these guys or pick up the completed project here.
I've mentioned SilverShake here before - the place where I get most of my silver jewelry. The last few times I've poked around their site, I've seen these beads that were pretty cute (nagara?). It's not "me", but I still thought they were worth posting about because of their cuteness. Anyway, have a look around and you'll see what I mean. SilverShake doesn't sell the actual bracelets these beads fit, but apparently there are three styles of "European bracelets" that they are to be used with: Pandora, Chamilia, and Biagi. I did a quick search and found a Pandora bracelet for $65. Well, by the time you tack on the price of the charms, which start at about $10 each, you'd be looking at a mighty pricy bracelet in the end. I still say it's worth wading through some ugly ones to see the cuties, though.
I'm sure I haven't been missed, but wow, it's been a tiring few days. This goddamned transit strike is going to be the death of me (and them, by the sounds of all the protesting). I now hate both sides equally. Well, I guess I always did, but it just keeps growing.
I was up at the crack of dawn, practically, on Thursday and Friday so Boss could pick me up. There doesn't seem to be a way to gauge the traffic properly. On Thursday, they were an hour late to me (he picks up another colleague near him) which meant I theoretically could have slept another hour, and we were about twenty minutes late (it took about half an hour just to drive from my place to work, which is even longer than how long the bus usually takes, but driving should take maybe ten). Friday they were right on time and we got to work in fifteen minutes, which meant we got to leave super early in the afternoon - yay!
I wrangled my mother's car from her for Saturday so I could stock up on groceries and finish Christmas shopping (when I asked her she was a bit perplexed until I reminded her that I need a bus to do practically anything). They came to get me Friday around supper (yes, they came to get me when traffic would be at its worst, although it was still lighter than it could have been - I was so frustrated with my mom by the time I dropped them back at their place that I was ready to scream - my mother is a nervous driver at the best of times, but add snow, narrow streets, and traffic and she stops listening and practically has a breakdown. This would be a cranky-worthy rant if I felt like typing it all out. LBA has heard my mom/driving rants before and she laughs and wonders how I'm still sane. Actually, I think she's worse when my aunt is in the car with her, so she was in trouble from the minute they left their place, but she seems to think she needs her along for the ride.
Saturday I got up way early, which is not my usual thing at all - I want my sleep on the weekends - but I knew I had to cram as much into the day as possible. The driving was doing wonders for my mental state. I don't care what traffic is like or anything - I just love to be behind the wheel. And let me tell you, this strike is certainly putting me into the mindset of buying a car. It would be earlier than I'd been thinking about, but it sure would be handy right about now. I have no idea what I'm going to do about work when Boss takes his booked holidays at Christmas. Mom called me at one point and told me to keep the car into Sunday so I'd have more time. This meant they were giving up going to church, but she insisted, so that was a bit of a relief because I knew I could get up early again today and get more done.
I traveled from one end of the city to the other and back again. I gave that little car a good run this weekend. Poor thing never gets out on the highway because my mother will not drive on the 417 unless she absolutely has to. Me, I'll go out of my way to get on it, and really, it does do the car a bit of good once in a while. So, except for my nephew's birthday at the beginning of January, I do believe I'm all done. I'm exhausted, both from all the running around and from no sleep-ins, but I'll be hitting the hay early tonight.
One of the Saturday errands was picking up a couple of parcels at the post office. One was a Christmas parcel from a friend back home (gah, the fun never ends - now I need to wrap and mail like crazy!) and the other was my small order from My Favorite Mirror (still haven't received the calendar I won from CO though - waaah!). I have no idea if I'll keep this stuff for myself or not, but I have always wanted to order from them and they were having a sale. Here's what I got:
I was so happy to finally find a US-based business who allowed me to choose the cheapy ground shipping. I paid less than five bucks for shipping and got it in about a week. That's no slower (as a matter of fact, it was probably faster) than paying outrageous $20 and $30 shipping charges that some outfits insist on charging to ship to Canada - yay MFM! Anyway, if you're interested, they are having another sale right now and it ends tomorrow. Mousepads are on for $10, mirrors for $5, and coaster sets for $10 (they're made out of the same material as the mousepads).
I have a few sorta random pics on my cellphone that I have to upload and post about at some point. Today I think I'll just leave you with the story of my little mess that happened just an hour ago. I was getting the last of my food bank and SPCA stuff together (I already brought stuff in for both but couldn't help but buy tons more this weekend) and I thought I'd go through my closet to see if I had some extras in there that I could part with - sometimes I'll buy stuff when it's on sale or a deal like 2-for-1 or something, even if I don't need it right then, so I figured there were definitely some goods available chez arbed. I had already gone through my kitchen cupboards so I headed to the linen closet. I start rooting around and sure enough, I hauled out several items (in addition to the sale stuff like I mentioned, I have a habit of forgetting I've bought something so I end up with extra that way, too). As I head to the bottom shelf (actually the floor, where laundry detergent and such are), I realize there's goop on the floor. And on some bags. And on everything I'm touching in that corner. My liquid detergent had apparently sprung a leak. Yeah. Fun. So I spent about half an hour wiping shit down and throwing shit out (luckily nothing good was ruined), and trying to keep the cat away. Take it from me, liquid detergent is not easy to clean up. I think I'd rather clean up cat puke, which Edgar apparently realized years before today because he ensures that I get ample opportunity to practice.
Okay, buh-bye now!
I love cookie cutters. It's always fun to find interesting or unique ones. I don't always buy them, but it's still fun finding them. This one, though, found via cakewrecks, I NEED (are you listening, Santa?)! You can buy it here, and don't forget to check out the video. I present to you, fetus cookies.
