Does anyone love this as much as me? Or as much as I do? I'll accept answers to both. From SaltyandSweet.
Edgar is going to be radiated. The vet doesn't recommend surgery, and I went in there having already mentally crossed it off the list of options anyway. We talked about medication versus the radiation. She is biased toward the radiation, but she did a good job of explaining both to me. With the meds, Edgar would have to go in several times over a four- to six-month period for blood work to ensure the medication levels are appropriate. Each round of a visit and blood work would cost about $230, and that's not counting the medication. And, of course, he'd be on the medication for life. The radiation is about $1,200, which includes the treatment plus the boarding for about ten days. Except in rare cases, no further therapy or treatment is ever needed. The facilities are not right in town, and Edgar and I have to go for a consultation with them first, but my limo service has agreed to help me out. I just want him better. I want him to gain a few pounds back, I want him to be happier. He meows a lot more than normal, often for no reason, he stares at me or off into space all the time, he's even sookier than normal, which I would have thought impossible. All of this, and more, will be taken care of, hopefully, with this treatment. There is a potential opening at the clinic on February 19th, otherwise there is nothing until March. The vet would prefer I get the earlier appointment, as would I. I should be hearing from the clinic tomorrow, since they didn't call this afternoon. One of the things they'll want to check on Edgar is his urine, but luckily, my vet has already done that as part of his bloodwork on the weekend. His kidney function is fine, so that's the main hurdle for the treatment down. I'll be relieved when this is all over. At least it's all happening quickly; from bloodwork to consultation to radiation consultation to therapy, all in less than three weeks. Hmmm, three weeks. Oddly enough, that's how much vacation time I get. And this particular situation may be putting a large crimp in any vacation plans I have for the year. But I love the little guy and that's what matters.
I just got a voicemail from the vet - Edgar is indeed hyperthyroid. He's at the high end, but it's still treatable/manageable. We'll either talk on the phone or I'll go in for a consultation on what to do next. She briefly described the three options to me on Saturday when she called with the other blood results, but now we'll have to go into more detail. I'll be working from home on Wednesday, so it would be nice if I can get in to see her that afternoon.
He was so cute this morning - he was sound asleep when my alarm went off so he didn't even take off for the kitchen like he usually does as soon as I start moving. He showed up in the bathroom doorway a few minutes after I went in, his eyes only open a slit against the light. He gradually opened them and still looked sooooo sleepy. I told him I know how he feels, but mornings should be back to normal as of Monday (they've revised bus plans and it looks like I'll be fine as of the first day they are back on the road). Needless to say, his stomach took over after about two minutes and the morning meowing session began.
By the way, "little guy" is what I call him sometimes. Even when he was 15 pounds I called him that. It's just more true nowadays. He looks so scrawny for being so tall and long. I'm sure he'll put a few pounds back on once this thyroid thing is straightened out.
For the past week, I've been making the trek out to my mother's place to pick up her mail while she's gone. Tonight after work, there were two cats outside the building. I've seen a rabbit there once or twice, but never cats. Anyway, I promised them I would stop and visit if they were still there when I left. Only one of them was left, that I could see, so I stopped and chatted with him for a bit, and gave him some pettings. He didn't make any noise at all. He rolled around and around and even showed me his belly. As you can see from the picture, rolling was probably about all he could do.
