Thanks to Tom for making me think to check out someecards for this auspicious occasion.

Should I have known what an ookpik is? Thanks for pointing out my apparent non-Canadian-ness, savage chickens. I'm gonna have to go cry into a maple leaf now.
I'm just slightly to the east of downtown Ottawa, right in line with Parliament Hill. The Snowbirds do a flypast or two every Canada Day. They just completed one and it went RIGHT ABOVE MY FREAKING BUILDING - reeeeaalllyy low. I mean my building is only three stories high and it seemed like I could reach right up and touch them, for pete's sake.
It's because tomorrow's Canada Day, so not only will I get to see the Parliament Hill fireworks from the comfort of my living room, it's a day off from work! Of course, I have already half-planned to come in to work for a while anyway, to get some stuff squared away, but that remains to be seen. It's still a day off and it's supposed to be absolutely gorgeous out tomorrow. I'm not normally one to complain about the weather, since there's not much you can do about it, but I sure am getting tired of hauling the extra weight of an umbrella around in my bag every day because there is some percentage chance of rain/thunder/whatever. Canada Day last year was beautiful as well, and I also worked part of it. I'm sensing a trend. Last year, after I put in a few hours of work, I walked part of the way home so that I could walk past all the little festival-y things set up. One of the main roads was closed down - it's fun to just wander. I took a bunch of pics with my phone and posted them here. Ah well, at least the day is going by quickly here, and I'm getting a fair bit of work done. Everything else will fall into place.
edit - I don't know wtf is up with the spacing, but I can't fix it - it looks just hunky-dory in my compose window... grrrr
Okay so after an interesting walk halfway home, I picked up some milk and kleenex and headed out to wait for a bus. It's too bad that my bus was re-routed for the day to allow for street closures. It would have made the wait more interesting. As it was, I had to satisfy myself with lots of red and white clothing (didn't matter what slogan or picture was on the clothing, as long as it had red and/or white on it - made for some interesting sights) and one couple fighting about not being able to hear each other, or something, which caused the youngest of their brood to start bawling.
Anyway, the first half of the walk was unexciting because it wasn't where the action was. When I got closer to the crowds, I started taking a few pictures and movies. The movies turned out to be absolute shit - I really need to get a digital camera. The pics are fine, considering they are from my phone. The best two vids that you're missing out on are the one where I was recording and didn't realize it (ooh, dizzy and upside down! My finger has a cameo.) and that Canada Day staple, chanting Hare Krishnas. In case you're interested, the words to their chant went something like "Hare Hare Hare, Krishna Krishna Krishna". If you really want, ask nicely and I'll upload the vid so you can hear them.
So, on to the pics:
Next we have some Falun Dafa practitioners meditating on what a lovely day it is outside today - beautiful sun, although still quite cloudy, not too hot, nice breeze. I forget what the sign says - Something Something Tolerance. Falun Dafa likes Canada.
Anyway, what I was trying to capture with this picture was the guy in the red windbreaker. I was hoping it would show up that on the back of his jacket it said "Czech Republic" or something like that. I saw lots of groups of people who were obviously visiting and I wondered if some of them were involved with the FIFA under-20 tournament that is in town.
This picture, although labelled as number two, was taken prior to the one above - more freaky time-warpage - whoa! Anyway, it's just looking in the other direction.
And that's it - it would have been much more interesting if I had been able to show you the videos. Or, if I had known they would be so shitty, I would have taken more pics. Whatever - you're probably asleep by now anyway. It's okay, you can wake up now - I'm done.
So I was waiting at the bus stop about half an hour ago to come to work (yes, work - it's quiet and I'll be able to get a lot of stuff done, hopefully, but still have another day off tomorrow) when I see a big plane circling downtown (I live just to one side of downtown). Suddenly, during one of the fly-bys, itty bitty specks start appearing from the plane - then they sprout a tail wayyyy up above them and they turn into skydivers! Turns out it's the Skyhawks. I knew someone named the Skyhawks would be performing today, but didn't know who they were. I was just hoping that the Snowbirds would be performing (still haven't found out). Anyway, they're an Army team doing a demonstration with a big flag and tandem divers. I've never seen a skydiver jump out of a plane in real life. Totally different from seeing it on TV, let me tell you. I think I would do it in a snap! Anyway, then the bus came so I could only see snippets of them whenever the bus turned a certain way and I could crane my neck the proper angle. Pretty cool stuff.
